Marketing Miracles: Donor Segmentation That Dreams Are Made Of Entry 70

How can nonprofits use multi-touch attribution to tell the whole fundraising story?

HubSpot attribution distributes credit across recorded interactions in a constituent journey. It helps nonprofits see which sources, assets, campaigns, and human engagements support contact creation, opportunity creation, and completed revenue without pretending that one report can perfectly explain why a person gave.

Recognize the full journey before the gift

A future donor may discover the organization through social, read an article, subscribe, attend an event, open and click several emails, view an impact page, speak with a development officer, and donate months later.

The donation page records the conversion, but it may not have created the relationship. The final email may have prompted action, but it may not have worked without the education, trust, events, stories, and personal conversations that came first.

Interpretation boundary

Attribution is decision support, not a perfect reconstruction of motivation

Reports analyze trackable interactions within the configured window and connected CRM records. They cannot independently measure every conversation, offline experience, community interaction, board introduction, direct-mail impression, untracked visit, personal relationship, or emotional factor behind a gift.

Keep recorded interactions, attributed revenue, influenced revenue, campaign performance, donor motivation, and causal proof distinct.

Use the attribution data source that matches the question

HubSpot data source Nonprofit interpretation
Contact Create Attribution Which interactions contributed when a subscriber, volunteer prospect, registrant, donor prospect, member, or constituent entered the CRM?
Deal Create Attribution Which interactions contributed when a prospective gift, sponsorship, membership, grant, or major-gift opportunity was created?
Deal Revenue Attribution Which interactions contributed to a completed donation, sponsorship, membership payment, grant award, or other closed-won revenue?

Deal create and deal revenue attribution require Marketing Hub Enterprise. Contact create attribution is available with eligible Marketing Hub or Content Hub Professional and Enterprise subscriptions.

Protect the work that builds relationships before an ask

Nonprofit marketing must educate people, build trust, demonstrate impact, reactivate disengaged supporters, cultivate larger gifts, recruit volunteers, and sustain connection when the organization is not asking for money.

Many assets supporting that work will never be the last interaction before a donation. Multi-touch analysis helps recognize the content and engagements that introduced, educated, nurtured, and converted the donor.

Example: a year-end donor journey

  1. The prospective donor clicks an organic social post.
  2. They read an article about a community need.
  3. They subscribe through a HubSpot form.
  4. They click a welcome email.
  5. They register for and attend a webinar.
  6. They read an impact story.
  7. They click a CTA in a year-end email.
  8. They visit the campaign landing page.
  9. They complete the donation form.
  10. The connected donation deal closes as won.

First touch might credit social. Last touch might credit the final eligible interaction. Linear can distribute credit across the recorded journey. Time decay can emphasize recent interactions. Empirical can weight interaction types using historical patterns.

Email distinction

An email open is not an attributed email click

HubSpot identifies a marketing email click as an attribution interaction when the recipient clicks a link in a HubSpot marketing email sent to the contact's primary address. Opens remain useful engagement indicators, but privacy protections, automated scanning, and image loading can make them less reliable.

If donors repeatedly click an email, click its CTA, read the linked story, and later donate, those assets may matter even when neither receives last-touch credit.

Include the interactions that matter to your fundraising model

Interaction Nonprofit example
Page view A supporter reads an impact page, campaign page, or article
Form submission A visitor subscribes, registers, volunteers, or requests information
CTA or marketing email click A constituent clicks a donation, registration, appeal, or learning link
Connected call or attended meeting A development officer completes a donor conversation or major-gift meeting
Sales email reply or conversation A sponsor or constituent responds through a tracked one-to-one channel
Ad or social click A prospect clicks a tracked advertisement or HubSpot-published post
Media play A constituent views eligible HubSpot-hosted video
Marketing event registration or attendance A constituent registers for or attends a connected event
Sequence enrollment An eligible contact enters a structured outreach sequence
Custom behavioral event A constituent completes a nonprofit-defined digital action

Several interactions are enabled by default, while media plays, event activities, sequences, and custom events may need to be activated in attribution settings.

Choose an attribution model for the question, not the preferred answer

Model Credit approach Best question
First Touch All credit goes to the first recorded interaction What introduces future supporters to us?
Last Touch All credit goes to the final recorded interaction before conversion What interaction occurs immediately before the gift?
Linear Credit is divided equally across eligible interactions Which assets participate throughout the journey?
Time Decay More credit goes to interactions closer to conversion Which recent interactions help close time-sensitive gifts?
Empirical Historical conversion patterns determine interaction-type weighting Which interaction types stand out across successful paths?

HubSpot's empirical model replaces several older position-based models, including U-shaped, W-shaped, J-shaped, and inverse J-shaped models.

Use first and last touch for focused perspectives

First touch helps evaluate awareness and acquisition: organic search, social campaigns, introductory content, and channels that bring new people into the audience. Its limitation is that it ignores subsequent nurturing.

Last touch helps identify appeals, donation pages, CTAs, and emails that immediately precede completed revenue. Its limitation is that it can overvalue the final ask and undervalue everything that made the donor ready.

Use linear and time decay to examine longer paths

Linear attribution recognizes every eligible recorded interaction equally, which provides breadth across long cultivation journeys. It does not prioritize the relative importance of a routine page view versus a development meeting.

Time-decay attribution recognizes the full journey while giving more credit to recent activity. It can suit Giving Tuesday, year-end, emergencies, registrations, renewals, sponsorship deadlines, and other time-sensitive campaigns, but it may underweight early trust-building.

Interpret empirical weighting in the context of data quality

HubSpot's empirical model uses historical conversion paths. Less frequent interaction types may receive greater weight because they are more distinctive than common actions. A form submission, for example, may stand out more than a page view.

The result still depends on sufficient, reliable data. Incomplete tracking, inconsistent deal associations, or very few completed journeys make empirical attribution less dependable.

Model strategy

Compare models before making investment decisions

A channel that performs well under every model sends a strong signal. A page that performs under linear but not last touch may be a valuable nurturing asset. A source that performs only under first touch may acquire people without moving them toward deeper engagement.

These patterns are prompts for investigation, not automatic reasons to increase spending or eliminate an asset.

Measure constituent acquisition before revenue exists

Contact Create Attribution can reveal which sources, campaigns, forms, landing pages, content, and events contribute when a newsletter subscriber, volunteer prospect, registrant, petition signer, resource downloader, donor prospect, sponsor lead, program participant, or partner enters the CRM.

Combined with deal create and revenue attribution, the organization can analyze a progression such as New Constituent to Qualified Prospect to Revenue Opportunity to Completed Gift.

Build attribution on complete CRM architecture

  • Consistent representation of attributable revenue
  • Closed-won stage for completed revenue
  • Valid deal amount
  • Accurate create and close dates
  • Correct deal-to-contact association
  • Relevant company or household associations
  • Reliable campaign and asset tracking
  • Tracking code on relevant external pages
  • Connected ad and social accounts
  • Logged calls, meetings, and emails
  • Governed UTMs for external traffic
  • Policies for refunds, reversals, write-offs, and canceled commitments

Without this foundation, a report can be technically functional and strategically misleading.

Design external donation data for attribution

A fundraising integration may create a payment, deal, custom donation record, property update, timeline activity, or some combination. Standard deal revenue attribution needs an appropriate closed-won deal connected to the relevant contact and populated with required revenue data.

Do not assume that an isolated custom object or external transaction automatically participates. Decide which streams become deals, whether every donation needs a deal, how recurring gifts and soft credits work, how household or multi-contact gifts are associated, how anonymous and offline gifts are entered, how grants and sponsorships differ, and how refunds or cancellations affect reporting.

Use attribution to protect valuable cultivation content

A stewardship article may rarely close revenue but consistently appear before renewals. A program update may build trust for a major gift. A volunteer story may introduce a future recurring donor. A webinar may create meetings that lead to sponsorship months later.

  • Which non-appeal content appears in successful journeys?
  • Which assets precede major gifts?
  • Which email clicks lead to later engagement?
  • Which events appear before donor renewal?
  • Which educational pages support recurring gifts?
  • Which campaign combinations improve outcomes?
  • Which interactions distinguish donors from non-donors?
  • Which cultivation assets deserve protection?

Interpret campaign and content attribution at the right level

Campaign attribution can measure contacts created, deals created, and revenue attributed across a connected initiative. Contact creation is available in eligible Professional and Enterprise subscriptions, while campaign deal creation and revenue attribution require Marketing Hub Enterprise.

Eligible website pages, landing pages, blog posts, marketing emails, and case studies can also show content-level attributed revenue, influenced closed-won deals, associated deal value, and connected contacts. These figures still depend on the selected model, interaction definitions, and CRM architecture.

Campaign association organizes assets and campaign performance. Attribution applies separate data requirements and models. Campaign attribution can differ from other campaign reports and does not treat static-list or workflow data as attribution interactions.

Use different reports for different questions

Report concept Question it answers
Campaign influence Who engaged with campaign assets under HubSpot's influence rules?
Attribution How should conversion or revenue credit be distributed among eligible recorded interactions?
Direct conversion Which asset or interaction was immediately connected with the action?
Donor journey What broader sequence of stages and interactions occurred before and after the gift?

Trying to force one report to answer all four questions usually creates confusion.

Account for known reporting limitations

Limitation Why it matters
Offline interactions Board introductions, personal conversations, print, and community recommendations may be decisive but invisible
Tracking gaps Blocked or missing tracking prevents page views and external activity from being connected
Record associations A closed-won deal without the right contact may lack the relevant interaction history
Missing deal data Amounts, dates, or inconsistent stages make revenue reporting incomplete
Identity resolution Consent, multiple devices, shared devices, deleted cookies, and anonymous activity fragment journeys
Imported history Historical gifts do not automatically recreate the interactions that preceded them
External platforms Incomplete contact, deal, campaign, or interaction sync creates incomplete attribution
Correlation Frequent appearance in successful journeys does not prove an asset caused each donation
High-volume reporting

Do not use attribution reports for exact raw activity totals

HubSpot may sample very high-volume attribution reports, including high-frequency activity such as email interactions and page views, to preserve performance and date range. Use traffic, activity, or custom reports when the organization needs an exact count of every activity.

Build a practical nonprofit attribution dashboard

Dashboard area Useful views
Constituent acquisition New contacts by first or last source, campaign, content type, landing page, form, and original source
Opportunity creation Donation, sponsorship, major-gift, membership, and grant opportunities by campaign, source, meeting, event, content, or referral
Revenue attribution Attributed revenue by source, campaign, asset, interaction, content type, and attribution model
Journey and content Common interactions before first or recurring gifts, assets in major-donor journeys, events before membership, and calls before large gifts

Answer governance questions before publishing dashboards

  • What counts as revenue?
  • Which streams become deals?
  • What does closed-won mean in each pipeline?
  • Are gifts connected to the right contacts?
  • How are recurring gifts represented?
  • How are anonymous and offline gifts handled?
  • Which interactions participate?
  • Which models will leadership review?
  • Which date ranges match donor cycles?
  • How will results be explained to executives and the board?
  • How will acquisition, influence, direct conversion, and attribution differ?
  • How do refunds and cancellations appear?
  • Which interactions exist outside HubSpot?
  • Who owns data quality?

Implement attribution in seven controlled phases

  1. Define revenue architecture: document individual, recurring, major-gift, sponsorship, membership, grant, ticket, merchandise, program-fee, and applicable in-kind streams.
  2. Validate required data: audit amounts, dates, stages, closed-won definitions, associations, and payment or fundraising integrations.
  3. Validate interaction tracking: confirm tracking code, consent, email, CTA, form, ads, social, calls, meetings, events, UTMs, and custom events.
  4. Configure attribution: select the interactions that should participate in deal create and revenue attribution.
  5. Compare models: build comparable First Touch, Last Touch, Linear, Time Decay, and Empirical reports.
  6. Build role-specific dashboards: tailor views for marketing, development, executives, board members, and operations.
  7. Create a review rhythm: evaluate after major campaigns, monthly or quarterly, before budgeting, and after architecture or platform changes.

Changing attribution interaction settings requires existing reports to be reprocessed, which can take up to two days depending on the account's data volume.

Give each team the attribution view it needs

Team Primary question
Marketing Which channels and assets support acquisition and revenue?
Development Which engagements contribute to gifts and opportunities?
Executive leadership Which investments appear to support sustainable revenue?
Board How do marketing and relationship-building contribute to mission funding?
Operations Where do tracking, architecture, or association gaps affect the data?

Use good attribution to improve the revenue strategy

  • Protect valuable cultivation content
  • Understand long donor journeys
  • Compare acquisition and conversion channels
  • Connect marketing activity with revenue
  • Evaluate campaigns more fairly
  • Identify donor-nurturing gaps
  • Improve fundraising investments
  • Demonstrate marketing's contribution
  • Align marketing and development
  • Build a more complete revenue strategy

The final ask matters, but the relationship began long before the donation form appeared.
