How can hierarchies be created?
Default parent-child company relationships
HubSpot's default company labels are available across plans and can be added manually, through imports, or through supported integrations and APIs.
Custom association labels
Eligible accounts can create labels such as National Organization and Local Chapter, Household and Household Member, or Sponsor and Sponsorship Contact. Paired labels describe each direction of the relationship.
Same-object associations
Some hierarchies connect records of the same type, including company to company, contact to contact, program to program, or chapter to chapter.
Custom objects
A custom object may be appropriate when households, chapters, programs, foundations, or service locations do not fit a standard object. Creating custom objects requires an eligible Enterprise subscription. First confirm that a standard or app-defined object, property, pipeline, or association cannot meet the need.
How can hierarchical relationships be used?
- View parent, child, household, chapter, or affiliate records
- Report on revenue by chapter or household
- Route inquiries to the appropriate office
- Notify national staff about local activity
- Create tasks for primary contacts
- Segment members by chapter
- Group sponsors across corporate affiliates
- Exclude duplicate household outreach
Supported reporting and workflow options depend on the object, association label, relationship direction, subscription, and account configuration.
